Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that originated in China. It is one component of Traditional Chinese medicine, a medical system that has its own system of diagnosis and uses many treatment methods including acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, bodywork and various meditation practices. Acupuncture stimulates specific areas on the body using ultra thin needles. This stimulation is thought to correct imbalances in the body’s energy flow and internal organs. Helfgott investigators are currently conducting studies looking into the nature of acupuncture points, including developing a device to measure electrical resistance of the skin at acupuncture points.
